The history of the Jatashankar Temple in Pachmarhi is rooted in a legend where Lord Shiva, during his fight with the demon Bhasmasur, concealed himself in the cave. As Shiva meditated, his matted hair, or ‘jata,’ struck the rocks, leading to the formation of the unique cave structures, including formations that resemble the divine serpent Sheshnag and Shiva’s matted locks. The temple is believed to be an ancient and sacred site, with a natural stream known as ‘Gupt Ganga’ flowing through it.
